Learn how to craft your own 3D polarized glasses at home using polarizing plastic and an old pair of eyeglass frames for movies and amusement parks.
Driven by current trends in Hollywood, 3D movies are back and better than ever. Almost all forms of entertainment nowadays—from amusement parks to movie theaters—make use of 3D technology, adding a new dimension of enjoyment for audiences. Nothing makes viewers gasp in wonder and surprise quite like the illusion of characters jumping out from the screen.
3D glasses are technically known as polarized glasses. The 3D illusion is created when polarized lenses limit certain light waves from reaching your eyes. These lenses filter out light waves so that they only travel in a specific direction; the technical term for this process is stereoscopy.
You can easily create your own polarized glasses by using polarizing plastic and any old eyeglass frames.
To create your own personal 3D video polarized glasses, you will need the following items:
- A sheet of polarizing plastic
- Glue
- Scissors or a utility knife, whichever you are more comfortable using
- A ruler
- A pair of plastic-frame glasses
- Make sure that your plastic-framed glasses do not have any lenses in them. You can easily remove the existing lenses by applying gentle pressure. Be careful not to damage the frames themselves, as doing so will defeat the purpose of creating your 3D polarized glasses.
- Measure the empty frames using a ruler. You can also use the lenses you popped out in the first step to get exact measurements.
- Cut out two pieces from the polarizing plastic, making each piece twice the size of your final lens measurements.
- Hold the two pieces of plastic on top of each other. Rotate the top piece until the overlapping area between the two turns dark. Doing this makes the polarization of the lenses perpendicular to each other—one with vertical polarization and the other with horizontal polarization.
- Using the measurements from the second step, cut new lenses from the polarized material you prepared in the fourth step.
- Place the new lenses into the eyeglass frames and glue them securely in place.
- You are finished! Take your new 3D glasses to the movies or an amusement park. If you are not getting the full 3D experience, try rotating the polarized lenses slightly until the characters begin leaping from the screen.
Note that it is recommended to use an old, unused plastic eyeglass frame to create your glasses. While you can make frames out of cardboard, it is not advisable due to their fragility, as they may only last for a single use before needing replacement.
It is also not advisable to wear these glasses in movie theaters that are not showing 3D films.
With the proliferation of Blu-ray and plasma TVs, it stands to reason that 3D movies will eventually become standard in home theater systems. It is best to have your 3D glasses ready at home when that time comes.
