Get your moped license

A moped originated as a bicycle equipped with a motorized pedal. It has become a good mode of transportation for traveling short distances within your community. A moped is usually classified below scooters and motorcycles and has different licensing requirements and driving restrictions. It is important to know how your state classifies a moped so you will know what type of license to get and where you will be allowed to drive your moped. The general classification is that the moped should be under two hundred and fifty kilograms in weight, with a maximum speed of about 50 km/h or 31 mph, and the engine should have a capacity of under 50cc. Here are the steps to follow to get your moped license.

  • Visit or make an appointment to get an application form from the local DMV office. Complete application form DL 44 and submit it in the proper window. It has to be an original form, as the local DMV office will not accept a photocopy. You will be required to provide a thumbprint and have your photograph taken. You can either apply for a Class M1 or Class M2 license. A Class M1 license allows you to operate a motorcycle and other motorized vehicles, while a Class M2 license will only allow you to operate a moped or a bicycle equipped with a motor. The current application fee for a Class M1 or M2 license is thirty-one dollars.
  • Pass the vision exam, which is also a requirement prior to the issuance of a license. The vision exam is a 20/40 visual acuity test with or without glasses. There are two types of vision tests. One is the Snellen chart test, which measures the keenness of your vision. The other is called the Optec 1000 Vision Tester, where you will be asked to read a test target 26 feet away from you. If you fail to pass either of these tests, you may be referred to an eye doctor to fit you with glasses or change the current glasses you are using.
  • Study the California Motorcycle Handbook, which you can download from the California DMV website. It may take some time to learn all the traffic laws and traffic signs. Once you feel that you have sufficient knowledge of the traffic laws and can recognize and identify the traffic signs, make an appointment with the DMV office to schedule the traffic laws exam. All the questions in the exam are taken from the handbook. You have three chances to pass this exam.
  • Once you have passed the vision exam and the traffic laws exam, you will be issued an instruction permit that will allow you to practice driving the moped. You should note that you are only allowed to practice during the daytime, on interior roads away from regular traffic, and definitely not on highways or freeways.
  • After sufficient practice, apply for the motorcycle rider training course if you are under twenty-one years of age. This is given by the California Highway Patrol. You need to pass this training and obtain the DL 389, or Certificate of Completion of Motorcycle Training. This must be submitted to the DMV for them to issue your driver's license.

The instructions given here are specific to the state of California and may apply to other states. Always check with the local DMV office to know all the requirements for applying for a moped license. You may need insurance and a title for your moped. And most of all, observe safety when driving. Wear a regulation helmet when you are out on the road driving your moped.
