Shoelace tying

Learning to tie your shoes properly is an important part of taking care of your shoes and avoiding accidents; tying your shoes will prevent tripping over shoelaces, not to mention helping keep your shoes on your feet. There are many different ways to tie your shoes. Keep in mind that practice makes perfect.

Method 1 - Standard Shoelace Knot

  1. Hold one end of each shoelace in each hand.
  2. Cross the shoelaces, making an X.
  3. Pass the top end of the shoelace under the other and through to the front. Pull tightly, making a starter knot.
  4. Take the right shoelace and fold it in half, making a loop.
  5. Take the left shoelace and pass it loosely behind and around the right loop, so that a hole forms between the left lace and the loop.
  6. Continue to wrap around until the left lace has made it around the right loop.
  7. Grab the left lace near the middle and start to pull it through the hole that was formed between the left lace and the right loop in step 5.
  8. As you pull the left shoelace through the hole, it should form a loop of its own. Grasp both loops and start to pull the knot tight.
  9. Continue to pull on the loops until the knot is tied firmly.

Below is a video demonstrating this method of tying your shoes.

Method 2 - The “Bunny Method”

  1. Hold one end of the shoelaces in each hand.
  2. Cross the shoelaces, making an X just as we did in the previous example.
  3. Pass the top end of the shoelace under the other and pull tight, making a starter knot.
  4. Make both ends of the shoelaces into loops by folding each of them in half.
  5. Cross the loops over each other so that the right loop is on top of the left loop.
  6. Wrap the right loop loosely around the back of the left loop so that a hole forms between the two loops.
  7. Pull the right loop back to the front through the hole.
  8. With the right loop through the hole, grasp both loops and start to pull each in opposite directions to tighten the knot.
  9. Pull firmly to secure the knot.

Learning to tie your shoes properly is important for keeping your shoelaces from dragging on the ground, maintaining foot and ankle support, and keeping your shoes on your feet! The bunny ear method is more common when teaching children to tie their shoes. There are many other methods of tying your shoes, but the above two methods are the most common and by far the easiest. They can be mastered with daily practice, so keep it up and you will be on your way to perfectly tied shoes.
