Make Your Own Hood Scoop

A hood scoop contributes to the best functioning of a car's engine. It helps air flow inside and around the engine or carburetor, allowing air to enter and circulate to provide additional cooling, which is good for the engine and improves performance. It also defines the appearance of the car, making it look like a muscle car, which most car owners prefer.

  • Prepare your needed materials. Make sure the things and tools you will need are available to make a good, functional hood scoop. You will need fiberglass fabric, fiberglass resin, a small grinder, a cutting wheel, an electric drill, a drill bit, rivets, a rivet gun, factory-match paint, a sanding wheel, a marker, fiberglass resin activator, a measuring tape, a spray gun, and a donor hood.
  • Find the right hood. First, you must have an extra hood to replace your existing hood. You can find one at an auto business shop. They might have recovered hoods from old or dumped cars. Just make sure to get one that is still in good condition and reusable. Find one that will fit your own car.
  • Cut the hood. If you have already decided which hood you are going to take home, then it is time to take it off or cut it from its body. Take only the hood, as it will save you some money. Mark the part you are going to take off with a marker to make equal sides of the square. Then start cutting it out. You will need your grinder and cutting wheel for this task.
  • Fit the hood. Now, fit the new hood to your car. You have to make a hole at the back of your donor hood. Cut a triangle shape on its two corners. This will make bending easier. Bend it about 90 degrees at the sidewalls of the hood scoop. Now, measure the walls that will serve as a base for the new hood you will attach, and then let it fit with your donor hood. Make sure it is centered for a perfect outcome.
  • Position the hood scoop. Locate your donor hood scoop in the right place on the car. Match it to the markings you made a while ago so that it fits well. Then, after positioning it correctly, you can apply the soaked fiberglass fabric to connect each part. Place soaked fiberglass fabric on the back part as well. You can use two strips of it to connect the donor hood to the sidewall of the car's hood scoop. Smooth or even out the surface of the fiberglass fabric. Apply just enough thickness so that, when sanding away excess fabric, you can give it the right and appropriate shape.
  • Sand it. Let the fiberglass compound dry. Leave it for about twenty-four hours to allow the materials you applied to set. Now start sanding the area where you applied the fiberglass compound to restore or attain the shape of the hood scoop. Use an electric drill and sanding wheel to finish this task. Run a piece of cardboard along the hood scoop to get its shape so that both sides and the area match together. When every side and shape is equal, you are done sanding.
  • Paint it. Prepare the primer paint you will have to apply. Then mix the color you are going to put on the hood scoop; you have to match it with the color of the entire car. Or you can choose any desired color you would want to apply if you are planning to change the color of the entire car. Use a spray gun with a compressor to paint it. Cover the area with masking tape or paper to avoid spraying paint on places that do not need to be painted. Apply four coats of paint, sanding right after each coat is dried.

Changing the hood scoop of your car can improve your car's appearance. Good luck, and I hope this helped!
