Make a Sandwich Board
Every good salesman knows the value of attractive signage. Appealing signage can communicate well with potential customers. Whether you run a small business or are holding a two-day yard sale, you need to create a visually appealing sandwich board.
You can ask a carpenter to make a sandwich board for you, but why bother with the extra expense if you can make it yourself? With the right tools and enough patience, you can create your own board for less than the cost.
Gather the materials you will need: two large boards measuring 1 inch thick, 6 inches wide, and 4 feet long; plywood or particle board measuring 2 feet by 23 inches; a saw; a drill and drill bit; screws; wood glue (choose a waterproof one); 2 hinges; wood primer; exterior latex paint; and 2 feet of chain or rope. You can buy these at a local craft store, or you can source them from old items in your garage.
Measure 24 inches, or 2 feet, from your board to make four legs. To ensure the right fit, lay the legs at the back portion of the panel frames (or the plywood). Leave 1 inch free at the bottom of the frame so you can attach the legs. Use your hand drill to make holes in each of the four legs: drill two holes in the top and bottom sections and another two in the center of each leg.
Using waterproof wood glue, place the legs on the plywood and glue them together. Attach them firmly with screws.
The hinges go on the top portion of each of the four legs. Attach the hinges with screws. If you have difficulty driving the screws through, feel free to use the hand drill to make small starter holes. You need to do this for both legs on one side of your board.
Once one side of the board is firmly screwed together, align the other legs and check the balance. Follow the same steps as above to attach the other legs to the other side of the board.
Let your sandwich board stand on its own. Check the alignment of the board and make sure it does not fall over easily. After you check the alignment, you are ready to paint the board. Use a primer to paint the board first. Apply two to three coats of primer before applying the actual paint. Apply two or three coats of paint. Make sure you allow each coat to dry before applying the next; this also applies to the primer.
The hinges will allow you to adjust the height of the board a small amount. Expand the board to its maximum position and attach the rope or chain to the sides. Use screws to attach the rope or chain. The rope or chain will help keep your board balanced even if someone bumps into it.
Prepare a printout of what you intend to post on your board. Be creative in designing your printout. Make it as artistic, attractive, and understandable as you can. Attach the printout to the board; use clear acetate if you want to make sure the paper does not get wet if it suddenly rains.
