An anode rod is necessary because it prevents a corrosion of a kettle-on-metal lining. As long as a serviceable anode rod is installed, it will wear out the metal of the rod instead of the water heater lining. The anode rod produces an electro chemical reaction in water, the water-heating protect.

Anode to be attached to rods to the top of the water heater with a ¾ inch hex countersunk screw. Most rods are approximately 3 feet 8 inches in length: just a few inches shorter than the water heater itself. The core of an anode rod is a steel wire framed by one of the three different metals: aluminum, Magnesium, or zinc. All the anodes are made of these three metals, and each rod has a specific use.

    • aluminum. Aluminum tubes are the best conditions, hard water, and most areas of the United States with hard water will have water heaters with aluminum tubes. To consider a simple possibility, if your area has hard water is to check your anode rod. When the steel wire is exposed to the Anode rod core, the rod is completely gone, or there is extensive passivation (see Anode Evaluation) This is indicative of hard water conditions.

pipes A word of caution concerning aluminum. Nowadays, many scientists believe that aluminum in the diet for the development of Alzheimer's disease. Therefore, you should never drink or cook with water from a water tank heating, the aluminum tubes. If you are unsure whether your Tank uses an aluminum anode rod, simply remove the rod (see Anode removal and fitting) and try to bend it with your hands. If it bends easily, it is probably made from aluminum.

    • Magnesium. Magnesium rods are the most common type of anode rod. Magnesium works best in areas where the water is too hard. They provide a Magnesium to replace the rod, make sure the water heater lining is not corroded. If the Installation of a new Magnesium Anode in a Tank, is corroded, it can cause the following electrochemical reaction, a Build up of hydrogen gas in this Tank, often water.
    • zinc. zinc rods are simply aluminum tubes with a Portion of zinc mixed with aluminum in a ratio of 1 to 10. The only reason for using an anode rod with zinc in it no sulphur is to reduce odor in the water. A new kettle almost never comes with a zinc rod already installed.

Now that you have, what kind of anode rod, the knowledge you have, the can inspection and evaluate your anode rod and a new if necessary, use the following steps to install.

      1. Anode Check-up. Your Boiler can last for many years, even decades, if you check regularly, the Anode-rods. Normal water conditions, you should check the rods at least every four years. They use plasticizers, such as rock salt or phosphates, the Rate of corrosion can be carbonate, up to three times faster than calcium — the actual cause of hard water. If you use other softeners, you should the Anode rod be checked at least every two years.
      2. Anode rating. Often, it is to be covered, the tail in calcium carbonate. Calcium carbonate is not corroded metal from the anode rod. Most of the times, can easily be removed with a towel or easy it is to brush off with the Hand. After they are removed any calcium carbonate buildup, check the tail. If the center is more sacrificial metal on the outside of the rod as made parts of the steel wire, the rod is still good.

Anode rods corrode predictably, usually at the top or bottom of the rod to start. When the steel wire is exposed more than six inches from the top or bottom, should be replaced in the tail. If the steel core wire in the center of the rod is exposed, it should be replaced. Also, if the present diameter of the entire rod is less than half the original ¾ inch diameter (about ⅜ inch), it should be replaced.

Sometimes the calcium carbonate build-up can become on the rod hard. When this happens, it is prevented to corrode the anode rod does its job and the lining of the Tanks begins. This accumulation of calcium carbonate is called passive control. Unfortunately, if the anode rod is passivated, you will not explain to just by. To bend the rod by hand and look for flaking at the bend. If desquamation occurs, replace the rod. Also, if the rod has split along its length or it is heavily pitted, replace.

After the outer metal of the rod has worn the steel to corrode wire. Thereafter, the Allen (or hot water outlet begins to corrode the nipple in a combination Anode). Then the Tank will corrode lining. If you find it in one of the above-mentioned conditions, the anode rod, damaged the water-heating already in this case, it will need to be replaced.

      3. access to the Anode rods. Conveniently, the anode rod is an important factor in the search for a new water heater. Sometimes the location of the Anode is written on the water heater instructions. If the instructions for your Boiler consideration are not so full, however, you can usually find the anode rod to the top of the water tank heating by means of a hex countersunk-head screw attached.
Hex heads are threaded, watertight plugs approximately ¾ inches in diameter. The hex will be either on the heater or hidden. If it is hidden, you should search for another water heater. If that's not an Option, the hidden hex head will be the most likely to be underneath a fiberglass, plastic or sheet metal Top. The anode rod can also be used with the hot-water outlets connected (see combination Anode). Commercial water heaters almost always have a hidden hex head, regardless of the type of water heater.
    1. Hex heads on older models hidden. The anode rod with a hidden hex head, you need to remove the top of the outer sheet. You highlight before you the outer leaf to remove the placement of the Top with a Marker This will again make it easier to assemble. Next, simply Unscrew the screws at the top of the site. Once the top is removed, it should be the hex is visible. Unfortunately, some models have foamed-in tops and cannot be removed. If this is the case, you need to call a professional.
    2. Allen on newer models hidden. Water heater Nueste may be a glass fiber or a plastic cover on the top. If this is the case, you will not be able to remove the cover. the please read the following carefully. If YOU don't feel comfortable doing it yourself, call a professional.

the Allen screw, you must Drill a hole about ¼ inch through the tip made of plastic or fiberglass. NOT in the Tank itself drilling. Use a long flat screwdriver to find the checkpoint under the top of the water heater, the Allen.

On Gas water heaters are the Allen at the same distance from the flue as the hot and cold lines from the flue gas cleaning. Electric water heaters, the Anode will not be centered. You need to search for may drill more than one hole for the Allen. Once you have found the Allen key, you can leave it permanently exposed. You use a hole saw plastic or metal cutting, a hole, large enough to carve out future access to the hex head. At this point, you need two people to loosen the Allen & man, constantly on the Tank, the other a breaker Bar and a Socket that the Allen key fits to use. This could be anywhere from ¾ inch, 1-1/16 inch./p>

    3. combination Anode. All water heaters have a minimum attached to an anode rod normally at the top of the water heater with a ¾ inch hex countersunk head screw. Some residential water heaters have attached two rods to the top with hex head screws. Most water heaters that use two Anode rods, drain attached to the second rod to the hot water pipe nipple. This is known as a combination Anode water heater. If your Boiler with a longer warranty, it is very likely, because it has a second combination anode rod.

If you are not sure that you are the Anode for a combination, you can check and find out. Your water is switched off first! This is the first thing you should do if any type of Check or maintenance on your Boiler. Then use a pipe to the hot water outlet clamp to the top of the furnace to separate. Use a stiff wire to carefully the hole to explore where the hot water nipple was. If the wire is approximately 3 to 6 inches directly down, you have found the Anode combination. If the cable meets no resistance, there is no Anode at the hot water outlet connected. You can remove the combination Anode with a pipe wrench.

If you do not want to install a combination Anode but have one, then simply remove the hot water pipe nipple and replace it with a combination anode rod. Make sure that the nipple is on the anode rod combination thicker than the insulation on the water heater. This is usually between 2 and 6 inches.

    4. Anode Installation. To remove the old rod, pull it as far as possible, bend it, pull it out then the Rest of the way. Bend the new rod in the center, set halfway up, straighten it against the Opening, and install the Rest of the way. Screws this time the anode rod. If you are not able to fix it in place, because it is too bent, pull it partially and use the Opening to straighten it further.

If you are the location of the water heater does not allow easy access to the wand to replace, and you are not able to the above instructions, consider a link-Anode. A link Anode is connected with an anode rod and consisting of many small Links and Links of sausage it resembles. You can also try a zinc anode rod because the metal is Magnesium more malleable.

If none of these options work, you need to drain the water heater and flip it easily accessible for the Anode far enough.

    5. Impressed Current rod in commercial water heaters. Some commercial water heaters use impressed current rods instead of the sacrificial rods. Impressed current rods require electricity because they create the self generating currents that Anode rods are suitable. Impressed current rods do not need to be replaced. However, you should be periodically cleaned.

impressed, The Position of the rod-power is listed in the instructions in plain view on the outside of the tank for most models. To clean, simply wipe with a clean towel. If you discover, on the inside of the water heater rust, call a plumber, the manufacturer, or install sacrificial anode rods.
