How to edit a HTML file

While many people editors to create and edit web pages with HTML, you can edit a HTML-page with a simple text editor such as Windows Notepad. If you don't know HTML and want to make small changes to an HTML page, use a text editor instead of HTML editor because HTML editors often unnecessary code on the page. A text editor, you can edit the specific code that needs to be changed, without any other codes.


What you Need

  • Windows Notepad

    • Web-browser

      • Open the Notepad text editor. Press CTRL + O or select "open" from the menu "file" the HTML page you want to edit. Change the file type from "text document" to "all files" to see a list of all file types and not only with text files. Alternatively, type "*.html" in the file name input box to list only the HTML files. You can browse through the directories on your computer until you find the HTML file that you want to edit. the
      • Select the "Save as" option under the "file" menu, rename the file before editing, so that you can revert to the original in case you accidentally a unwanted change. You need to create a text document file with a ".html" extension. To do this, select "text documents" as the save type, but enter a new file name that ends with ".html" extension. If you rename your HTML file with the name "webpage.html" for example, the file "webpage-edit.html." Select enter "ANSI" as encoding. the
      • edit the HTML file the same way you edit the text document. Scroll down to edit the code and change the text file. the
      • Select the "Go To" option in the "edit" menu, if you know which line need to edit the HTML code. Enter the number of the line in the "Go To" line-input-box and press "OK" to edit directly the line that needs to. the
      • Click on "CTRL-H" or select "Replace" in the "edit" menu to search for text within the HTML file and replace it with new text. For example, if you want to change a website link to a new website link, enter the actual website link in the "Search" input field and enter the new URL in the field "Replace by" field. the
      • Press the "Save" button in the "file" menu, save the updated HTML file. the
      • Open a web browser and show the updated HTML file by selecting "Open" from the "file" menu. You can find the HTML file on your computer and press the "Open" button. Review the changes to ensure that the changes are sufficient. the
      • Back to Windows Notepad. Select "Save as" from the "file" menu. Click on the name of the original HTML-file and make sure the " save as type "text document" and the encoding "ANSI". Press the "Save" button. Answer "Yes" when asked if you want to replace the original file.
